Tour Down Under 2017: Ewan powers to victory and leaders jersey in stage 1
At 118.5 kilometres, stage 1 in the 2017 Tour Down Under turns out to be a fast men's battle with Caleb Ewan outpowering Danny van Poppel and Sam Bennett. The route between Unley and Lyndoch was shortened. Because of temperatures above 40 degrees one loop of the closing circuit was taken out. (Slideshow route/profile)

Race report
The heat doesn’t bother Laurens De Vreese. The Belgian escapes after 3 km and soloes stoically on until he is caught around the 100 kms mark, just before the intermediate sprint where Jay McCarhty collects a time bonus of 3 seconds.
Jan Bakelants gives it a go, but he is reeled in with around 5 kms remaining. Nothing stands in the way of a bunch sprint.
Ewan is in a class of his own, finishing ahead of Van Poppel and Bennett and taking the first leaders jersey in the 2017 Tour Down Under.
Let’s see what happens next when stage 2 finishes uphill after a punchy closing climb.
