Tour de Suisse 2024 Route stage 5: Ambri - Carì
Featuring a 4.9 kilometres climb at 8.9% to Altanca, the 5th stage of the Tour de Suisse starts out with a local lap. Back in the starting venue, the riders remain in the valley for almost 10 kilometres before the second climb already leads to the finishing venue. It's an 8.8 kilometres toil at 9.2%.
The riders move through the finish line after 32 kilometres, but the race is far from over. They fly back down into the Leventina Valley and follow the Ticino downstream for tens of kilometres, all the way to Bellinzona. Then they return northward again, taking a 15 kilometres detour to Sellavalle after Biasca.
Eventually, the riders are back in Faido, at the foot of the finish climb back to Carì. It's the same side where they descended before. The ascent is 11.2 kilometres long and averages 8%.
Back in 2016, the 6th stage finished in Carì after the same ascent. Darwin Atapuma won from the breakaway that day, finishing 4 seconds ahead of the first GC rider, Warren Barguil.
Starting at kilometre 127.8, the Golden Kilometre offers two opportunities to gain time bonuses of 3, 2, and 1 seconds. The first three riders at the finish line take 10, 6, and 4 seconds.
