Tour de France 2027 Route stage 10: Annecy - Sallanches

Tour de France 2027 Tuesday 13 July – Stage 10 of the Le Tour is a prelude to the World Championships road race. The riders travel from Annecy to Sallanches and, just as in the battle for the rainbow jersey, the Côte de Domancy plays a key role in the finale. The 171-kilometre route features 3,750 metres of climbing.

Type: mountain stage
Favourites: climbers, attackers

The Côte de Domancy is a 2.5-kilometre climb with an average gradient of 9.4%. Four editions ago, this little wall featured in the finale of a mountain time trial. Once the riders reached the summit, they had just 3 kilometres left to the finish in Combloux. Jonas Vingegaard was in scintillating form that day – and, in fact, throughout the entire Tour – putting more than 1 minute and a half into runner-up Tadej Pogacar.

While Sallanches takes centre stage when it comes to the World Championships road race, Annecy plays a similar role in the time trials, although the route will be very different. The time trial at the Worlds is predominantly flat, whereas stage 10 of Le is quite the opposite.

Starting in the famous lakeside town, the riders head uphill towards Ferières almost immediately. The climb is not particularly demanding, but it sets the tone for the rest of the day. In total, six categorised climbs are on the menu.

The first climb is the Col du Plan du Salève, a 9.5-kilometre ascent with an average gradient of 5.4%. The summit comes after 26 kilometres, and halfway down the long descent there is another short, uncategorised climb. The route then continues downhill on a more gentle gradient and, shortly after passing through Bonneville, the Montée de Brison serves up a proper wall: 5 kilometres at 10.2%.

The descent leads to Cluses, followed by the only truly flat section of the day. This lasts for a little over 20 kilometres, after which the riders take on the finishing circuit, on which the Côte de Domancy comes first. After the sprint for the mountain points, the road continues to climb towards La Demi-Lune and, after a negligible descent, the Montée du Bettex adds 5.5 kilometres of climbing at 8.8%.

Once over the top of the Montée du Bettex, there are still 54.5 kilometres to go. First comes a long descent to Chedde, followed by the Côte du Plateau d’Assy: 5.1 kilometres at 7.5%. The descent then brings the riders back to the foot of the Côte de Domancy.

After the second ascent of the World Championships climb – 2.5 kilometres at 9.4% – there are just 9 kilometres remaining to the finish in Sallanches. The first part is downhill and the rest on flat roads.

As said, the 2027 World Championships road race will take place in the area surrounding the Alpine town, bringing the event back to the region for the third time. In 1964, Jan Janssen claimed victory by outsprinting Vittorio Adorni and Raymond Poulidor, and in 1980, Bernard Hinault proved untouchable. After a devastating attack on the Côte de Domancy, he won the rainbow jersey more than 1 minute ahead of Gianbattista Baronchelli.
