Race report
Neilson Powless attacks from the gun, while Nelson Oliveira, Anthony Perez, Kobe Goossens, Matis Louvel and Sebastian Schönberger track him down. Giulio Ciccone and Louis Meintjes bridge across in the last 5 kilometres of the Galibier, while Perez goes solo. He reaches the summit 25 seconds ahead of Powless, Ciccone and Meintjes. The four come together on descent.
Tom Pidcock attacks from the peloton in the Galibier descent and he rejoins Chris Froome, who attacked in the climb.
Goossens, Oliveira en Schönberger regain contact with the four leaders on the Télégraphe before Pidcock and Froome make it across when the downhill continues.
The remaining attackers – Pidcock, Froome, Meintjes, Ciccone, Powless – reach a maximum lead of more than 7 minutes on the Croix de Fer, but it has fallen to 4 minutes at the summit. Ciccone pockets most KOM points.
The five tackle the Alpe d’Huez climb 6 minutes ahead of the peloton.
Pidcock accelerates 10.5 kilometres before the finish. Gradually he distances Meintjes, the first chaser, and Froome, the second.
Meanwhile, the GC group is down to Kuss, Vingegaard, Pogacar, Thomas, and Mas. Then Pogacar speeds up. Vingegaard follows him like a shadow. Thomas comes clawing back.
The scenario repeats itself with a second Pogacar attack. Meanwhile Pidcock crowns his solo with his first Tour de France stage win. Meintjes finishes in second, Froome in third.
Vingegaard stays in yellow and, although Bardet limits his losses to 19 seconds, the Frenchman drops back to fourth place, behind Pogacar and Thomas.
