Tour de France 2016: Route and stages

The 2016 Tour de France was won by Chris Froome, while Romain Bardet finished in second and Nairo Quintana in third. Froome laid hands on the yellow jersey in the descent of the Peyresourde in stage 8. Back-up by a strong Sky-squad he cemented his lead in stage 11, 12, 13 to put and end to any doubts by powering to the win in the mountain time trial of stage 18. His performance on Mont Ventoux was striking when he, a Kenya born Briton,  ran up the mountain after a crash.

The Route

The 2016 Tour de France did start July 2th at the rocky island Mont Saint-Michel just off-shire Normandy to finish at the Champs-Elysées in Paris in three weeks time. In between start and finish lies an interesting parcours with a lot of climbs in Massif Central, Pyrenees, Provence. Jura Mountains, and Alps.

Mont Saint-Michel - Utah Beach

Saturday, July 2, 2016 – Stage 1 of the Tour de France starts in the picturesque town of Mont Saint-Michel. The most likely outcome after 188 kilometres of racing through Normandy is a bunch sprint. Utah Beach was one of the code names of the Allied Invasion in World War II.

Sunday, July 3, 2016 – In 183 kilometres stage 2 in the 2016 Tour de France leads from Saint-Lô to Cherbourg Octeville. The finale is marked by a 3.1 kilometres climb with a steepest section at 14%. Messieurs puncheurs, detonate the fireworks!

Monday, July 4, 2016 – Stage 3 leads from Granville to Angers. At 223.5 kilometres, the race is among the longest stages in the 2016 Tour de France. Expect the race to boil down to a bunch sprint on a slightly uphill arrival.

Tuesday, July 5, 2016 - At 237.5 kilometres, the stage heading from Saumur to Limoges is the longest in the 2016 Tour de France. The finale is fingerlicking good featuring a short climb with 8 kilometres remaining plus a final 500 metres stretch at 5%.
