Race report
Straight from the gun Markel Irizar, Mirco Maestri, Natnael Berhane, Stepan Kurianov and Sebastian Schönberger go on the attack. The five race to a lead of 5 minutes before the peloton takes the reins.

Peter Sagan punctures inside the last 20 kilometres when the advantage of the leaders has fallen below 1 minute.

The front group is history with 13 kilometres remaining and Primoz Roglic counters an attack in the last 3 kilometres. Alexey Lutsenko, Simon Carke and Tom Dumoulin close the gap.

They are brought back before Roglic gives it another go, but once again it all comes together. All the while Julian Alaphilippe remains well-placed and when Greg Van Avermaet opens up the uphill sprint to the line, the Frenchman overhauls with ease to claim his first ever stage victory in the Tirreno-Adriatico.

Adam Yates places fifth to move into the overal lead.
