The remaining 168 riders left Amatrice. Notable absentees were Richie Porte and Thibaut Pinot who both pulled out due to illness.
After showing his form in stage 4, Contador put in what could be the race defining attack at the Passo Lanciano- distancing his rivals, catching the breakaway and riding to another stage win. It was classic Contador and not even Nairo Quintana could get anywhere close to El Pistolero.
The GC leader starting off today was Michal Kwiatkowski but the young Pole blew completely and dropped out of the top 10.
Contador now has a comfortable lead in the GC, over two minutes ahead of Nairo Quintana, with two stages to go.
