Race report
The riders go straight at it from the start, but it still takes a while before the breakaway is established. Femke Markus is first to go, and then her sister Riejanne rides across to her. Liane Lippert later joins them to make it a trio and they open up a lead of 4 minutes.
On the Alto del Tenebredo the trio’s lead drops to 1 minute and a half, but they manage to add another minute on the approach to the Angliru.
Once on the climb, the gap drops back below 2 minutes. The Markus sisters lose contact on the early slopes, while Liane Lippert sees the red jersey of Anna van der Breggen appear alongside her with 5.5 kilometres to the summit. The race leader is accompanied by Petra Stiasny, Valentina Cavallar, Paula Blasi, Marion Bunel and Juliette Berthet.
Marion Bunel opens a gap with 4.2 kilometres to climb and Paula Blasi rides across to her. As Van der Breggen is losing ground, Blasi decides to go solo.
Petra Stiasny catches Paula Blasi with 2 kilometres to go to the summit, and rides away. The Swiss rider powers on to victory, while Blasi finishes second to take the overall victory.
Anna van der Breggen reaches the finish in fifth place and finishes the Vuelta second overall, while Marion Bunel completes the final podium.
