Matthew Holmes jumps clear at kilometre 4 and Aimé De Gendt tracks him down. The two open up a gap of 3 minutes before the peloton takes control.
Holmes wins the KOM sprints on the Côte de Vétheuil and Côte de la route des Crêtes.
The duo is caught with 73 kilometres to go, while Frederik Frison escapes some 20 kilometres later. Alexis Gougeard and Yevgeniy Fedorov rejoin the Belgian and the three put more than 1 minute into the peloton. They are caught with 10 kilometres remaining.
Roglic, Van Aert and Laporte open up a gap on the climb in the finale. The Jumbo Visma trio forges on in TTT style and finishes 22 seconds ahead of the main group. Domestique Laporte is granted the yellow jersey and crosses the line in first position.
