Vuelta 2026: Brenner triumphs atop Sierra de la Pandera, Mas tightens grip on red

Race report
Despite a lot of movement, it takes a long time for a breakaway to get away. And when it finally does, it’s a big one. A group of 45 riders manages to break clear. Among them are João Almeida, Keven Vermaerke, Steve Krijswijk, Jørgen Nordhagen, KOM leader Santiago Buitrago, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Iván Sosa, Filippo Zana, Pello Bilbao, Pablo Castrillo, Raúl García Pierna, Marco Brenner, Juan Guillermo Rodriguez, Christían Rodríguez, Clément Berthet, Georg Steinhauser, Mario Aparicio, Water Calzoni, and Lorenzo Fortunato.

The group’s advantage peaks at more than 7 minutes, before Vermaerke extends it to over 8 minutes when he attacks solo on the descent of the Puerto de Los Villares.

Just before the final climb begins, the American finds himself with company again as Steinhauser appears alongside him on a wall of Valdepeñas de Jaén. The German continues on his own, but has to settle for Martin joining him over the final 9 kilometres. The breakaway continues to swell as Aparicio, Brenner, Calzoni, Buitrago, Paret-Peintre, Sosa, Berthet and Rodríguez also make their way across.

Aparicio spends 1.5 kilometres out on his own before being caught by Buitrago. Brenner is just behind the King of the Mountains and joins them a little later.

Meanwhile, Richard Carapaz attacks lower down the climb, with only Enric Mas, Felix Gall and, a little later, Primoz Roglic able to follow.

Sosa and Rodríguez manage to close the gap to the two leaders, but as soon as Buitrago accelerates under the flamme rouge, they are immediately dropped again. Brenner, however, launches his pursuit and powers straight past him. The Colombian tries to get back on terms, but the finale is too fast, and the German takes his first Grand Tour victory.

In the group of overall contenders, Roglic is repeatedly caught on the back foot and eventually has to let Mas and Gall go. The four-time Vuelta winner finishes 25 seconds behind them and has to surrender second place to Gall, while Mas retains the overall lead.
