Race report
Marc Soler and Byron Munton initiate the breakaway after roughly 20 kilometres, with Nairo Quintana, Andreas Leknessund, Giulio Ciccone, Richard Carapaz, Mattia Cattaneo, Bart Lemmen, Andrea Raccagni Noviero, Ramses Debruyne, Embret Svestad-Bårdseng, Jake Stewart, Damien Howson, Rudy Molard and Diego Uriarte bridging across. The fifteen open up a lead of just over 2 minutes.
The Coll de Pradell trims the breakaway to Ciccone, Soler, Carapaz and Svestad-Bårdseng, after which the quartet tackles the Collado de San Isidre 1 minute and a half ahead of the peloton. With 3.5 kilometres to the summit, Ciccone tries to shake off the others. Initially, Carapaz refuses to let him get away. The Ecuadorian hangs on for a while before being dropped after all.
Ciccone reaches the top 15 seconds ahead of his three former companions, while the general classification riders are another half-minute back. That's not enough for the Italian.
GC riders such as Oscar Onley, Felix Gall and Mattias Skjelmose lose contact in the descent and at the start of the final climb, the new lead group features Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel, Florian Lipowitz, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Lenny Martinez, Afonso Eulálio, and a lone survivor from the day’s earlier break, Richard Carapaz.
With 2.5 kilometres to the summit, Jonas Vingegaard accelerates. Initially Florian Lipowitz and Lenny Martinez can follow, but when the Dane raises the pace again, he rides clear.
Vingegaard solos unchallenged to his second consecutive stage win, after which Martinez outsprints Lipowitz for second place. Those two now also sit second and third overall, while Felix Gall finishes seventh and drops to sixth in the GC.
