Race report

Dries De Bondt, Xabier Mikel Azparren and Roberto Carlos Gonzálezare the day's breakway riders. The three open up a gap of more than 3 minutes.

On the climb to Ripatransone, Alpecin–Premier Tech - in the shape of Matheu van der Poel - turns the screw in the peloton. The breakaway is reeled in and the likes of Jonathan Milan, Sam Welsford and Arnaud De Lie are dropped. Even after his sprint leader Jasper Philipsen loses contact, Van der Poel keeps on pushing.

In the final 66 kilometres, the sprinters regain contact with the peloton. Only De Lie is left behind, still trailing at 2 minutes.

Matteo Jorgenson wins the intermediate sprint and takes over second place in the general classification from Giulio Pellizzari.

With 33 kilometres to go, De Lie makes sure the sprinters’ showdown in San Benedetto del Tronto will be complete by bridging back to the peloton. Although Jonas Abrahamsen tries with a late attack to ruin the fast men's fun. His chances grow when Jasper Philipsen and Paul Magnier hit the deck inside the last 3 kilometers.

The Norwegian cannot hold on, and Jonathan Milan goes on to sprint to a convincing victory. Isaac del Toro crosses the line safely in the peloton to win the Tirreno–Adriatico, ahead of Jorgenson and Pellizzari.
