Giro 2027 Route stage 12: Montecatini Terme - Zum Zeri
Published on 5 November 2027
Montecatini Terme is famous for its thermal baths. The Giro has visited the spa town on eighty occasions, although we have to go back to 2012 for the most recent stage finish. Robert Ferrari won a bunch sprint that was thrown into disarray by a crash.
This time, Montecatini Terme serves as the starting point for a race that ends with a first, as the finish line is drawn at Zum Zeri, a mountain pass and modest ski resort in the Apennines. The climb to the finish rises for 8.7 kilometres at an average gradient of 8.7%, with the steepest ramps reaching 13%. However, you could reasonably argue that the climb is more than twice as long, as the road begins to rise in Pontremoli, roughly 25 kilometres from the finish.
The route leading up to the finale is fairly unremarkable. Just past the halfway point, the riders tackle the Force Carpinelli, a 16.8-kilometre climb averaging 4.1%, and after a long and steady descent, the road rises gently on a false flat towards Pontremoli. Roughly 16 kilometres later, it is time for the final climb.
