Giro 2027 Route stage 14: Cantù Arena - Piani di Bobbio
Published on 4 November 2027
The riders roll out from the Cantù Arena, a sports complex in Cantù, Lombardy, and some 15 kilometres later, they face the Madonna del Ghisallo, a regular feature of Il Lombardia, although the Race of the Fallen Leaves usually tackles it from Bellagio. From this side, it makes for a gentle introduction: 10 kilometres of climbing at an average gradient of 3.6%.
The riders descend to Bellagio and follow the shores of Lake Como to Lecco, where the road begins to rise towards the foot of the Culmine di San Pietro. If you count from Lecco, it’s a 27-kilometre climb at an average gradient of 4%, but the race organisers see it differently. Officially, it’s a climb of just over 9 kilometres at 5.6%.
A 40-kilometre descent, which includes a short climb, takes the riders to Miragolo San Salvatore. The 10 kilometres ascent dishes up an average gradient of 6.3%. Like the previous climb, it has featured on the Giro route several times, but never as a stage finish.
The grand finale comes at Piani di Bobbio. For the third time, the riders face a 10-kilometre climb, but this one averages a punishing 9%. That’s hellish stuff, especially after everything they’ve endured earlier in the day. There’s little Giro history here either, although in 2013 Germany’s Patrick Sinkewitz won a stage finish at Piani di Bobbio in the Settimana Ciclistica Lombarda.
It’s an unfamiliar, winding journey through the mountains of Lombardy, but one the riders are likely to remember for quite some time.
