Giro 2027 Route stage 5: Filottrano - Sassotetto

Giro d'Italia 2027 Wednesday 12 May – At 139 kilometres, stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia runs through the Apennines from Filottrano to Sassotetto, a ski resort at 1,465 metres above sea level. The final climb stretches over 13.1 kilometres, with an average gradient of 7.4%.

The climb to Sassotetto was the first and toughest of the day in the penultimate stage of last year's Tirreno-Adriatico. That stage finished on a punchy climb to Camerino, where Isaac del Toro took the win ahead of Tobias Halland Johannessen and Matteo Jorgenson. The following day, the Mexican secured overall victory.

The riders roll out from Filottrano in honour of Michele Scarponi. It was the home town of the 2011 Giro d’Italia winner, who died in a training accident in 2017. The opening section is flat to rolling before the first climb comes around halfway. The ascent to Camerino is 3 kilometres long and averages 8.8%. Last year, this climb formed the finale of the aforementioned Tirreno stage.

After the descent and a flat section, the climbs to San Ginesio (6.3 kilometres, max. 8%) and Gualdo (a two-part ascent of 6.8 kilometres, max. 13%) follow in quick succession. After a stretch of flat road and another short climb, the riders then descend towards Sarnano, where the final ascent to Sassotetto kicks in. Reaching the ski resort requires 13.1 kilometres of ascending at 7.4%, while she steepest section ramps up to 14%.

Sassotetto is more of a Tirreno-Adriatico staple than a Giro d’Italia one. The last time a professional peloton finished in Sassotetto was at the 2023 edition of the Race of the Two Seas. Primoz Roglic won the sprint from a select group that day, although the the finish line was moved further down the mountain because of strong winds at the summit. As a result, the final climb was 2.4 kilometres shorter, although the average gradient remained roughly the same at 7.3%.

The last time the Tirreno-Adriatico finished at the summit was in 2020. Simon Yates attacked from the group of favourites with 4.5 kilometres remaining to solo to victory. In 2018, Mikel Landa celebrated victory at the ski resort.
