Race report
Mattia Bais, Lewis Askey and Ewen Costiou intitiate the breakaway shortly after the start. Costious decides against it on second thought and waits for the peloton, while Simon Geschke and Manuele Tarozzi replace him at the front. Their maximum lead is slightly over 2 minutes.
The peloton trails by 1 minute on the Passo del Bracco. Fabio Jakobsen is the first rider to lose contact in the peloton, because Alpecin-Deceuninck sets a fast pace. Tim Merlier, Fernando Gaviria and Caleb Ewan are struggling in the last 3 kilometres, but they make it back on the descent. Meanwhile, the attackers are caught. Jakobsen rejoins the peloton with 90 kilometres remaining.
Enzo Paleni, Michael Valgren, Andrea Pietrobon and Benjamin Thomas initiate the second breakaway righ after the intermediate sprint in Ceparana. They open up a lead of over 1.30 minutes.
The gap is still 25 seconds inside the last 2 kilometres, and under the flamme rouge, things start looking very positive for the break, which inspires Pietrobon to attack. Valgren brings him back before Thomas outguns the Dane in the sprint for the win.
Tadej Pogacar retains the maglia rosa.
