Race report
Andrea Pietrobon, Manuele Tarozzi, and Alessandro Tonelli are the breakaway riders. The trio races to a lead of 3 minutes. That’s all they get.
Ineos ups the pace in the crosswinds with 62 kilometres to go. The peloton splits, and Jonathan Milan is among the riders forced to chase. The lead group is caught, while the alarm bells are ringing for about 20 kilometres. Then it’s gruppo compatto again.
Dries De Pooter and Martin Marcellusi establish the second breakaway inside the last 30 kilometres. De Pooter drops his companion halfway to the finish line before he is caught himself with 9 kilometres to go.
Lidl-Trek does a perfect job in leading out Jonathan Milan, and when Fernando Gaviria opens his sprint early, the maglia ciclamino uses the Colombian as his final launch pad before storming to his third stage win in the Giro d’Italia.
Tadej Pogacar finishes safely in the peloton to extend his lead in the GC.
