Race report
Mark Donovan is the first attacker at kilometre 4, and Mathis Le Berre goes after him. Donovan doesn’t wait en he takes most points at the first two KOM climbs to secure the mountains jersey before he lets Le Berre overhaul him after 32 kilometres.
Donovan cements his mountains competition lead at the third and last KOM of the day.
For tens of kilometres, the two riders race over 4 minutes ahead of the peloton before being caught within the last 16 kilometres.
Attacks by Nils Politt and Jonas Rutsch are neutralised and then it’s up to the fast men in Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule.
Mads Pedersen rounds out an excellent Lidl-Trek lead-out to take the stage win and leader’s jersey.
