Vuelta 2026 Favourites stage 19: Attackers at Peñas Blancas

The red caravan initially follows the coastal road to Málaga, and after passing through the city, the opening climbs appear after around 80 kilometres. Over the following 60 kilometres, the riders tackle the Puerto de Las Abejas (14.5 kilometres at 4.3%), Puerto del Viento (13.1 kilometres at 3.7%) and Puerto del Madroño (13.7 kilometres at 3%, uncategorised), before descending back towards the coast.

After following the flat coastal road for just under 20 kilometres, they tackle the final climb in Estepona. It opens with double digit gradients and eases off a little after 2.5 kilometres, but the road then kicks up again. In total, the final climb is 18.8 kilometres long, averaging 6.5%.

With the next stage being a monster ride through the Sierra Nevada, it seems likely that the GC contenders will keep their powder dry. In that case, we can expect a battle for the stage win first, followed by a fight for seconds or even minutes among the riders dreaming of the red jersey.

The last time the race finished on Peñas Blancas, in 2022, Carapaz won from the breakaway. The riders followed the coast all day back then, with the stage decided solely on the final climb.
