Tour of the Basque Country 2023: The Route

Tour of the Basque Country 2022Itzulia Basque Country kicks into gear on Monday 3 April to finish on Saturday the 8th with an attrition race in the Eibar region. As always, punchers and climbers will find a fair share of their favourite terrain, while half of the stages end on descent.

Stage 1 is played out on a lumpy route that should suit sprinters with a strongmen skillset, while stage 2 takes in five classified climbs before a downhill finale.

Featuring four walls inside the final 15 kilometres, stage 3 is a puncher’s dream. The 1.1 kilometres long finishing ramp goes up at double digits and throws in a 26% gradient just before the line.

Stage 4 is played out in the hills southwest of Bilbao. The last climb is La Asturiana – 7.4 kilometres at 6.5%, but with a much steeper first half – before the riders fly down to the line.

The penultimate stage of the Tour of the Basque Country traverses lumpy terrain and the elevation gain adds up to almost 3,200 metres. The finale is something to look forward to, as three short climbs inside the last 9 kilometres make way for a descent to the line.

Seven classified ascents are on the menu in the decisive 6th stage. The hardest climbs appear in the middle section before a 5 kilometres climbs at 4.8% precedes a downhill onto the false flat finale.
