Race report
After first attacks have been neutralised, Davide Formolo, Cristian Rodriguez, Xabier Azparren and Tony Gallopin jump clear at kilometre 8. Azparren can’t follow the pace, but he regains contact with Nelson Oliviera. Only to be dropped again on the Endoia.
On the steepest climb of the day, the Krabelin, Formolo is the only remaining attacker. Roglic attacks from the peloton, while Martínez, Mas and Vlasov join the former race leader straight away, while Vingegaard, Elissonde and Izagirre regain contact later. Evenepoel regains contact in the last kilometre of the climb.
Mas strikes and Vingegaard, Martínez, Izagirre, Vlasov and Soler bridge across before the summit.
Bilbao tracks them down on descent, while Mas hits the deck. Martínez and Soler lose contact and winds up in a group with Evenepoel.
Vingegaard, Izagirre, Vlasov and Bilbao catch Formolo inside the last 27 kilometres. They crest the Urkaregi 17 seconds ahead of Evenepoel et al before rejoining the leaders back in the valley.
Evenepoel gains 3 bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint just before the finish climb. Martínez takes 2, Bilbao 1.
Formolo escapes as soon as the road kicks up. He opens a 1 minute gap.
Izagirre up the pace in the GC group, where Evenepoel loses contact.
Vlasov, Martínez, Soler and Vingegaard catch Formolo inside the last 4 kilometres. Izagirre regains contact just before the summit.
Soler opens the sprint, but Izagirre overhauls him to storm to victory. Martínez finishes in fourth and takes the GC win, while Izagirre and Vlasov round out the final podium.
Overnight leader Evenepoel crosses the line 24 seconds later oand drops back to fourth place overall.
