Tour of the Basque Country 2016
Edition 56 of the Tour of the Basque Country was won by Alberto Contador. He outperformed the two Colombians on the podium, Sergio Henao and Nairo Quintana, in the mountainous ITT that concluded the 6-day stage race. Along with José Antonio González, a powerhouse from the seventees, this win made Contador the shared record holder with four overall victories in the Tour of the Basque Country.

At 16.5 kilometres, the closing stage of the Tour of the Basque Country is an individual time trial on a mountainous parcours containing a 5.5 kilometres climb at 8.5%. Stage 5 – Huge solo victory Diego Rosa, Sergio Henao new leader
Stage 5 in the Tour of the Basque Country leads over eight peaks to the finish near the Santuario de la Virgen de Arrate. In over hundred kilometres Diego Rosa soloes to an impressive victory. Sergio Henao and Alberto Contador attack at the last climb to finish second and third. Henao is the new leader 6 seconds ahead of Contador, while Kelderman tumbles to eight in the overall.Read more »
Stage 4 – Stage win Sammy Sanchez, Kelderman new leader
The 4th stage of the Tour of the Basque Country is a spectacle race with six peaks. After the super steep climb up the last ramp at Aia the race explodes in the last kilometres with Kelderman and Contador attacking, while a counter by Sammy Sanchez brings him the stage win. Stage 3 – Stephen Cummings soloes to tight victory, Landa retains lead
At 193.5 kilometres, stage 3 in the Tour of the Basque Country leads to Lesaka. The last 30 kilometres are spiced up with three mountain tops, but the race is decided by a late Cummings attack. The Briton soloes to a tight victory in Cummings style. Mikel Landa retains the overall lead.Read more »
Stage 2 - Landa bests Kelderman on steep closing climb to take leader's jersey
At 174 kilometres, stage 2 in the Tour of the Basque Country leads from Markina-Xemein to the Ermita de Garrastatxu. This equals a short and steep closing climb and it's here Landa and Kelderman attack. They power to the line, where the Basque outsprints the young Dutchman, thus taking the overall lead in his home race. Behind their backs Contador puts 4 seconds into Quintana and 11 seconds into Aru.Read more »
