Race report
Michael Leonard, Ben O'Connor, Andrea Mifsud, Johannes Kulsett, Maxime Decomble, Antonio Tiberi, Fausto Masnada, Sylvain Moniquet, Gijs Leemreize, George Bennett and Pau Martí break away on the climb to Selvino, while Louis Vervaeke bridges across a little later. It’s only when Victor Campenaerts and Julien Bernard jump across to the lead group that the peloton calms down a little.

The fourteen carve out a maximum lead of over 3 minutes.

On the Madonna del Ghisallo, the gap has come down to 2 minutes when O’Connor attacks. Moniquet, Leonard, Leemreize, Bennett, Bernard, Masanada and Vervaeke regain contact, while Matteo Jorgenson, Quinn Simmons, Brandon McNulty and Christian Scaroni attack from the peloton in the last part of the climb. They reach the chappel at the summit 45 seconds behind the breakaway and 15 seconds ahead of the peloton.

Masnada drops back into the McNulty group, and with 45 kilometres to go, they are swallowed up by the peloton.

As the riders tackle the San Fermo della Battaglia for the first time, the breakaway’s advantage has grown back to 1 minute and a half. By the summit, that advantage has been halved, before Leonard, the last remaining attacker, is caught on the Civiglio.

The group of favourites splits apart as Paul Seixas sets the pace. Intially, Tom Pidcock and Giulio Ciccone are able to follow, but the Frenchman drops them both in the final 2 kilometres.

Seixas crests the climb 30 seconds ahead of Ciccone and Enric Mas, with Pidcock just behind them alongside Filippo Zana.

As the riders approach the final ascent of the San Fermo della Battaglia, Seixas maintains his advantage over the first two chasers, while Pidcock and Zana drift back into an 11-man chasing group.

Seixas extends his lead over the chasers on the climb as Mas drops Ciccone.

With that, the podium places are settled: Seixas wins Il Lombardia, Mas finishes second and Ciccone takes third. Evenepoel then wins the sprint for fourth place.
