Race report
A crash in the early phase of the race takes out Marlen Reusser and former winner Lizzie Deignan. When the dust settles Justine Ghekiere, Mieke Docx, Elena Pirrone, Josie Talbot and Gladys Verhulst-Wild jump of the front. The five carve out a lead of over 3 minutes.
Ghekiere is the last rider to be reeled in before Puck Pieterse, Marianne Vos, Letizia Paternoster, Silvia Persico, Elisa Longo Borghini, Kasia Niewiadoma, Karlijn Swinkels and Lorena Wiebes go on the attack on the Koppenberg. Lotte Kopecky, Demi Vollering, Léa Curinier, Shirin van Anrooij, Pfeiffer Georgi and Fem van Empel are the first chasers.
Kopecky struggles on the Taaienberg, but she manages to keep up. Yet, she capitulates at Oude Kruisberg.
Vollering almost makes it across on the Hotond, but the gap widens again after attacks by Niewiadoma dn Longo Borghini. The Tour de France champion keeps on pushing and regains contact inside the last 24 kilometres.
Van Anrooij also makes it across and she strikes straight away. Swinkels and Pieterse go after her, while Kopecky rejoins the chase group just before the Oude Kwaremont.
Van Anrooij reaches the summit of the last climb, Paterberg, ahead of her team mate Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma. The three come together and the first chasers – Vollering, Kopecky, Vos, Persico, Pieterse – are 20 seconds behind.
The chase does not pay off and Longo Borghini wins the sprint ahead of Niewiadoma. It’s her second win in the Tour of Flanders.
