A race from Glenelg to Victor Harbor was included before. The Tour Down Under raced between these places in 2018 (Elia Viviani win) and 2017 (Caleb Ewan), although this year’s route has more similarities to the Unwood-Victor Harbor stage from 2016, which was won by Simon Gerrans.
Following a day on undulating roads the most demanding uphill task appears after reaching the coast of Fleurieu Peninsula in Port Elliot. The route heads back inland to climb Kerby Hill. This 3.9 kilometres ascent at 6% is crested with 20 kilometres remaining.
An uphill kick in the last 6 kilometres leads onto a technical final kilometre with two tight turns before the home straight.
The first three riders one the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints – at kilometre 33.9 and at kilometre 56 – come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds each.
