The only categorized hill is exactly halfway and roads get flatter and flatter towards the end of the race. The route is a lot like last year's stage 5. Back then Sacha Modolo was fastest in a disorganized sprint, with Cavendish crashing.

Last year, the pack passed through Biel/Bienne early in stage 8. The riders were heading for an uphill finish in Verbier, meaning a victory for the young Colombian Esteban Chanves.

Biel/Bienne dates back to 1200 and it is the cradle of the Swiss watch industry. Anno deo 2015 the headquarters of Omega, Rolex and Swatch are still based here. The prestigious 100km Ultra Marathon is battled out in the bilingual town as well.
