Tirreno-Adriatico 2016 Route stage 3: Castelnuovo Val di Cecina – Montalto di Castro
Friday, March 11, 2016 – Stage 3 in the Tirreno-Adriatico leads from Castelnuovo Val di Cecina to Montalto di Castro. In 176 kilometres two climbs in the Maremma region await the riders, but as the last 35 kilometres are flat to descending the fast men must be pleased.
Upon leaving Castelnuovo Val di Cecina the pack races om rolling roads before a long drop kicks in. After around 50 kilometres a flat section leads to the foot of the regular climb up to Scansano. Located at an elevation of 500 metres, the picturesque medieval town is the highest point of the day.
The next climb is shorter. On the SP 159 the riders climb to Montemerano and just before reaching Manciano the road goes down again. Leading towards the Tyrrhenian coast, the last 40 kilometres or so are mostly in descent.
After a short section at 7% in the last kilometre, the arrival in Montalto di Castro is slightly uphill, offering chances for the likes of Peter Sagan.
