Race report
Franziska Brauße and Virginia Bortoli are the first attackers of the day. The duo hit the first sterrato with a small lead, but a crash by the German contributes to them being caught soon after. Despite multiple attack attempts, the peloton stays together afterwards.
Kasia Niewiadoma loses her chances with a crash 50 kilometres from the finish.
A little later, Femke Gerritse attacks on the gravel sector of Colle Pinzuto. She is caught on the Le Tolfe sector. Mavi García takes over the attack, after which Gerritse (her again) responds, along with Kimberley (Le Court) Pienaar, Évita Muzic, Yara Kastelijn, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, and Marte Berg Edseth. The seven put 1.30 minutes into what’s left of the peloton.
The gap shrinks rapidly on the Colle Pinzuto, and with 15 kilometres to go, Demi Vollering, Juliette Labous, Noemi Rüegg, Puck Pieterse, Anna van der Breggen, and Niamh Fisher-Black bridge across.
In the descent leading to the sector towards Le Tolfe, Van der Breggen opens up a small gap. On the climb, she is joined by Labous, Ferrand-Prévot, and Vollering, after which the latter attacks just before the summit. Only Van der Breggen is able to follow.
The duo opens up a lead of 1:50, after which Van der Breggen makes the first move on the final climb in Siena. Vollering initially follows, but with 500 metres to go, she launches such a ruthless attack that she finishes 18 seconds ahead of Van der Breggen.
Ferrand-Prévot beats Labous in the battle for third place.
