Ruta del Sol 2023 Route stage 4: Olvera - Iznájar
Saturday 18 February - The 4th stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia takes the peloton from Olvera to Iznájar. The route amounts to 164.2 kilometres, while the road flies down in the last 10 kilometres before a punchy finale in the narrow streets of Iznájar.
Three years ago, Gonzalo Serrano won in Iznájar with a late attack, while young Belgian Rune Herregodts succeeded in the village from the breakaway last year. But, on both occasions, the approach was different.
Climbing starts virtually from the gun with the ascent to Algámitas before the riders enter a predominantly flat phase. The route then returns to climbing after 90 kilometres on a false flat to Lucena and the ensuing ascent up the Cerro de San Cristobal. After moving through Rute – a low-gradients climb – the next challenge comes in the shape of the Alto de Jaramillo. Which is a short – 3.5 kilometres – but steep test.
The ascent to Fuentes de Cesna is the last chance to gain KOM points. The riders reach the village after 4.3 kilometres of climbing and with 10 kilometres to go. Most of it goes downhill, but the route goes back up again – and steep – in the village of Iznájar.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
