Race report
The breakaway riders are Marco Frigo, Warren Barguil, Huub Artz, Abram Stockman, Siebe Deweirdt, Xabier Mikel Azparren, Joseba López, Valentin Retailleau and Filip Maciejuk. They build a lead of 5 minutes over the peloton.
In the final 70 kilometres, the gap has come down to 1 minute, while only three riders remain at the front: Marco Frigo, Huub Artz and Xabier Mikel Azparren.
Approaching the crucial phase featuring the Loorberg, Gulperberg and Kruisberg, only two riders remain out front: Marco Frigo and Huub Artz. Their lead is still 1 minute and 30 seconds as they tackle the Loorberg.
On the Gulperberg, Marco Frigo heads out alone, while Romain Grégoire attacks from the peloton on the Kruisberg. Mattias Skjelmose, Remco Evenepoel, Matteo Jorgenson and Kevin Vauquelin follow his move and they pick up Huub Artz. When Vauquelin slips in a corner, only Skjelmose, Evenepoel and Grégoire remain at the front.
The three catch Frigo on the Fromberg with 35 kilometres to go to leave him behind on the Keutenberg. The breakaway rider winds up in a group with Benoît Cosnefroy, Mauri Vansevenant, Alex Baudin, Lorenzo Germani and Albert Withen Philipsen.
On the penultimate ascent of the Cauberg, Remco Evenepoel rides so hard on the front that Romain Grégoire is dropped. The two remaining leaders stay together into the final lap, including on the Cauberg itself.
Evenepoel launches the sprint with so much grinta that he immediately opens a gap. He wins the Amstel Gold Race for the first time in his career, while Benoît Cosnefroy takes the sprint of the chasing group 2 minutes later.
