It’s a nervous day with break away groups in large quantities and numerous constitutions. When in the grande finale Dries Devenyns and Damiano Caruso try to make a difference, it’s Nibali himself making an end to their story. With 4 kilometre left a decimated pack is riding to the closing climb in Fayence.
Former stage winner Tom-Jelte Slagter attacks with Rui Costa on his wheel. With Slagter having a chain problem it looks like the World Champion is heading for glory. But at fifty meters Carlos Betancur pops up and takes the stage. Grabbing some bonus seconds the Colombian is thenew GC leader.
In taking back Devenyns and Caruso Vincenzo Nibali overestimated himself and in the closing climb he did not only lose the stage, but possibly Paris-Nice 2014 as well.
