Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge 2020: Favourites

Nairo Quintana 2020 - Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge 2020: FavouritesWith the inaugural edition held last year, the race is still young, but the Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge has all it takes to become something big. Who are the major contenders to win this one-day contest on the Giant of the Provence?

Obviously, with two ascents of the mythical mountain this race is something special. The first time goes up to Chalet Reynard before looping back to Bédoin. Then the riders tackle the entire climb and finish on its summit.

The first ascent to Chalet Reynard begins 77 kilometer into the race. The climb to the hotel is 10 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 9%. The second ascent amounts to 20.8 kilometres at 7.5%, but since the first part is easy it might be better to say that Mont Ventoux actually begins in Les Bruns, just before entering the forest. This way, the summit climb is 15.7 kilometres with an average gradient of 8.8%.

For most riders the Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge is their first race after the corona break, so they will be eager to find their form. Looking at his performances before the lockdown, Nairo Quintana is the man to watch. The Colombian rediscovered his jojo at his new team, Arkéa Samsic. This spring he won the Queen Stages of Paris-Nice, the Tour de la Provence and the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes et du Var. He also pocketed the GC in the last two races.
