Race report
Manuele Tarozzi, Joan Bou, Diego Pablo Sevilla and Alessandro Iacchi make up the day’s breakaway. The attackers build up a maximum lead of 4 minutes before being caught with 40 kilometres remaining.
The peloton stays together until the steep muddy sterrato that opens the finale.
The peloton stays together until the steep and wet sterrato that opens the finale. Once on the sector, Julian Alaphilippe takes the lead, soon followed by Giulio Pellizzari. But when it really matters, Mathieu van der Poel sets the pace, with Matteo Jorgenson and Isaac del Toro on his wheel. When the American misses a corner, the Dutchman is clear.
With 4 kilometres to the finish, Del Toro and Pellizzari rejoin Van der Poel and the three ride together into the narrow streets of San Gimignano. On the steep paving slabs they remain together, before Pellizzari launches the sprint. Van der Poel goes past him, though Del Toro comes back strongly in the final metres. It turns into a thrilling sprint, but with the expected winner: Van der Poel.
Del Toro finishes second and takes the overall lead, 3 seconds ahead of Pellizzari.
