Race report
After 25 kilometres, Victorie Guilman, Tiril Jørgensen and Valentin Constance jump off the front. Laura Molenaar sets off in pursuit, followed by Solbjørk Minke Anderson, Fariba Hashimi, Danielle de Francesco and Sylvie Swinkels. The eight riders come together and carve out a maximum lead of 4 minutes.
Halfway through, the whole group comes back together, after which Maeva Squiban sets off on her own. She builds a lead of over 1 minute, and by the time she reaches the foot of La Redoute, it’s down to 30 seconds. On the steep ramps, Elisa Longo Borghini is dropped by the peloton.
Squiban is caught, and a group of around twenty riders reaches the summit first. Then, Pauliena Rooijakkers makes her move, while Antonia Niedermaier, Anna van der Breggen and Cédrine Kerbaol bridge across to her. The quartet reaches the base of the Côte des Forges 25 seconds ahead of the chasers.
At the top, that gap is down to 10 seconds, but then it extends again. Once they reach the Roche-aux-Faucons, the gap is back down to 10 seconds.
At the front, Van der Breggen accelerates, and only Kerbaol can follow. As Puck Pieterse, Demi Vollering, and Lotte Kopecky catch up on the steep sections, the two-time winner is forced to drop back.
Kerbaol jumps clear on the rolling section after the summit. As several riders are coming back from behind, Pieterse accelerates. Vollering follows her move with Kimberley (Le Court) Pienaar in her wheel. With 9 kilometres to go, they’ve got them.
Vollering opens the sprint from the front, but first Le Court and then Pieterse overtake her. That’s the podium order.
