Race report
Siebe De Weirdt, Simon Guglielmi, Artem Shmidt, Ceriel Desal and Tom Paquot instigate the breakaway. The quintet quickly establishes a 2-minute lead, but that’s all they get.
With the gap dropping below a minute, Tobias Foss and Robert Stannard bridge across to the leaders. Andreas Leknessund and Fredrik Dversnes replicate that move later. While Deweirdt drops back, the remaining attackers manage to restore thee 2-minute advantage.
Defending champion Stephen Williams can’t follow the peloton on the first climb of the finishing circuit, and on the first ascent of the Mur de Huy, Paquot loses contact with the front. By then, the peloton has closed to within 1 minute of the breakaway.
As Mattias Skjelmose hits the tarmac, Foss, Leknessund and Dversnes are the only attackers to tackle the Mur de Huy for the penultimate time. Despite their lead shrinking to just 13 seconds at the summit, they manage to cling on as far as the Côte de Cherave.
UAE Emirates whittles the peloton down to just thirty riders on the Cherave, and the leading group stays together until the final 500 metres. Then, Tadej Pogačar explodes as if the Mur de Huy has no 10% gradient. His lead quickly becomes so substantial that his rivals are already on the ropes. Victory for the world champion, with Kévin Vauquelin finishing second, 10 seconds behind, and Tom Pidcock completing the podium, 12 seconds back.
