Race report
Fabio Van den Bossche, Jonas Rutsch, Benjamin Thomas, Tim Mersman and William Blume Levy are the first attackers of the day. They open up a 1-minute lead.
The break is neutralised before the Col de la Porte. After that, Valentin Paret-Peintre goes solo on the climb. He crests the top 20 seconds ahead of Marc Soler, but the Spaniard does not get any closer after that and winds up in the peloton.
Paret-Peintre builds a maximum lead of just over a minute on the peloton, which begins to shrink on the Côte de Châteauneuf-Villevieille. The race’s second-placed rider in the general classification, Daniel Felipe Martínez, crashes on the climb and is forced to chase.
As they approach the Côte du Linguador, the lone attacker’s efforts come to an end, while Dani Martínez tackles the last climb of the day with a 45 seconds deficit.
After a lead-out from Victor Campenaerts, Jonas Vingegaard takes over with 2.4 kilometres to go. Only Lenny Martinez is able to follow. They reach the summit half a minute ahead of the first chasers: Georg Steinhauser, Kévin Vauquelin, Harols Tejada, Ion Izagirre, Mathys Rondel and Alex Baudin.
The situation remains unchanged for the rest of the stage, setting up a sprint-à-deux. Vingegaard forces Martinez onto the front, but the Frenchman keeps his cool and launches his sprint from far out to hold it all the way to the line. Vingegaard still has reason to celebrate, as he wins three classifications: overall, points, and KOM.
