Race report
Antonio Polga, Filippo Ridolfo, Félix Hamel, and Jonas Walton attack from the gun before Frank van den Broek and Artem Shmidt chase them down. Polga can’t keep up with the pace and loses contact by the end of the first lap. Several laps later Ridolfo is dropped as well, while Walton is distanced with 115 kilometres remaining.
The maximum lead of the breakaway riders is 5 minutes.
In the last five laps, only Shmidt and Van den Broek are left at the front. Then Ben Healy launches an attack on his own, but without success. The regroupment takes place just before the final lap.
Matteo Jorgenson attacks in the first part of the final lap. He is caught by Arnaud De Lie, Maxim Van Gils, Jenno Berckmoes, Tadej Poggacar and Julian Alaphilippe with 3.5 kilometres to go.
A regroupment takes place and then it’s Michael Matthews who sprints to a commanding triumph.
