Race report
Three riders ride away from the start. Mattia Bais, Filippo Tagliani and Samuele Rivi open a 6 minutes gap before the peloton takes control.
The gap has fallen to 30 seconds when Rivi accelerates inside the last 44 kilometres. Bais follows him like a shadow. The lead of the two grows back to more than 1 minute before the catch is made 28 kilometres before the line.
Pascal Eenkhoorn outsprints Rick Zabel for the KOM points on the only climb of the day. He pushes on alone before he is brought back with 6 kilometres remaining.
Mark Cavendish opens the sprint early. Very early. But he keeps on pushing and holds off Arnaud Démare and Fernando Gaviria to take his first Giro win since 2013.
Mathieu van der Poel stays in pink.
