Race report
Paul Lapeira, Mattia Bais, Stefano Gandin and Thomas Champion attack from the gun. Alessandro Verre chases them down and the five carve out a 6 minutes lead. Then the peloton takes the reins.
The last three attackers – Bais, Gandin, Champion – are reeled in with 35 kilometres to go.
Mark Cavendish and Mads Pedersen are among the riders who are caught in a pile-up 3.4 kilometres before the line. Tao Geoghegan Hart, Jay Vine and Hugh Carthy are the most prominent GC riders behind the crash.
Jonathan Milan takes the spoils in the ensuing bunch sprint. Remco Evenepoel finishes safely in the bunch to stay in pink.
