Race report
A quartet attacks from the gun. Leysen, Quarterman, Sevilla and Champion open up a 3 minutes gap before the peloton takes the reins.
Leysen leaves his companions behind inside the last 25 kilometres. He extends his lead at first, but then it goes down. He is caught with 5 kilometres to go.
Matthews opens the sprint early. The Australian holds on until the final metres. One Italian appears on the left, another Italian on the right. The one on the right takes the win with the tiniest of margins. Dainese outguns maglia ciclamino Milan to win the second Giro stage in his career.
Thomas still leads the Giro with Almeida and Roglic inside 30 seconds.
