Race report
Alessandro De Marchi, Mattia Cattaneo, Louis Vervaeke, Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier and Derek Gee jump off the front in the early kilometres. The pace remains high and Ghebreigzabhier, Vervaeke and Cattaneo can’t follow.
The pace remains high for tens of kilometres, as several riders try to bridge across. Magnus Cort and KOM leader Davide Bais track the two leaders down after 50 kilometres.
Aleksandr Vlasov is dropped from the peloton sick. He keeps on trying, only to give up after 80 kilometres.
The four leaders put almost 5 minutes into the peloton. The gap has fallen below 4 minutes on the summit of the Passo delle Radici.
Bais is no longer on board in the climb to Monteperpoli. The three remaining chasers reach the village 2 minutes ahead of the main group. Jay Vine hits the deck in the descent an he is forced to chase.
Mark Cavendish makes it back to the peloton inside the last 60 kilometres. Pascal Ackermann also regains contact. But it’s to no avail.
The three sprint for the win in Viareggio. Cort takes a commanding victory to complete the trilogu – stags wins in the Tour, de Vuelta and Giro
Geraint Thomas finishes safely in the bunch to extend his GC lead.
