   Tim Merlier wins the first bunch sprint of the Giro d'Italia ahead of Giacomo Nizzolo and Elia Viviani. Filippo Ganna extends his GC lead with a time bonus of 3 seconds.

   Umberto Marengo, Filippo Tagliani and Vincenzo Albanese are the breakaway riders who battle it out for the first KOM jersey. The latter moves into the blue maillot.

   The 2nd stage on the Giro is one of six stages with the maximum amount of points for maglia ciclamino available. Stage winner Tim Merlier pockets 50 points and is the new leader in the points competition.
