Brabantse Pijl 2023: Favourites

Benoit Cosnefroy - Brabantse Pijl 2023: Favouritesfoto: Cor VosBrabantse Pijl is a transition race between the cobbled Classics in Flanders/France and the hilly Classics in the Netherlands/Wallonia. A daunting gauntlet of short and sharp climbs leads onto a false flat finale. Cyclingstage.com takes a closer look at the major contenders to win the Brabantse Pijl.

The route of Brabantse Pijl – or, La Flèche Brabançonne – was revamped in 2021 in favour of a false flat drag to the line. The first edition with the new finish was won by Tom Pidcock, who outsprinted Wout van Aert and Matteo Trentin. The false flat-run in served last year as a red carpet for Magnus Sheffield. The young American attacked inside the last 4 kilometres from a lead group with Remco Evenepoel, Tim Wellens, Benoît Cosnefroy, Warren Barguil, Ben Turner and Tom Pidcock. Sheffield powered to the win, while his team mates Pidcock and Turner shut down all attacks behind him.

Recent winners of Brabantse Pijl are Sheffield (2022), Pidcock (2021), Alaphilippe (2020), Van der Poel (2019), and Wellens (2018). None of them participate this time.
