The race opens with a local lap. The riders tackle the Bemelerberg, Cauberg, Geulhemmerberg and, again, Bemelerberg before heading south. The riders cross the Dutch-Belgian border after 35 kilometres and continue on rolling terrain before Mont-Theux appears at kilometre 72.
Mont-Theux is a 2.8 kilometres climb at 5.6%. With almost 50 kilometres to go, it’s a gentle warm-up to the finale, which opens on the iconic Côte de la Redoute. The 1.6 kilometres ramp rises at 9.4% out of the Amblève Valley. Following the descent the route climbs for 2.8 kilometres at 4.4% to Cornémont before the Côte des Forges adds 1.3 kilometres at 7.8% to the mix.
Still more than 23 kilometres to go at this point. High time for the Grande Finale!
The Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons is mentioned as the last climb of the day, but that’s not really the case. The 1.3 kilometres ramp at 11% peaks out with 13 kilometres remaining. Following a short downhill the route continues uphill for 2 more kilometres – false flat at first, then at over 6%. A virtually flat section leads to the descent towards Liège with over 5 kilometres to go. After reaching the city the route is flat in the last 2 kilometres.
The finish is situated at the Quai des Ardennes in Liège.
The first three riders on the line earn time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint – 2.5 kilometres after the Roche-aux-Faucons – comes with 6, 4, and 2 seconds.
