Race report
Johan Price-Pejtersen, Stan Dewulf, Lewis Askey, Connor Swift, Simone Petilli, Albert Withen Philipsen, Mark Donovan, Pepijn Reinderink, Anders Foldager, and Fabian Weiss break away in the run-up to the first sterrato. The ten open up a 5-minute gap.
On the sterrato of Monte Sante Marie, the gap falls below 1 minute. Only Askey, Swift, Donovan, Reinderink, and Weiss remain at the helm, while the ‘peloton’ features only six riders – Tadej Pogacar, Tom Pidcock, Isaac del Toro, Tim Wellens, Gianni Vermeersch, Richard Carapaz – near the end of the sector.
Then Pidcock attacks, and Pogacar takes over. With great effort, the Brit manages to stay in the wheel of the World Champion.
Swift sees the duo storm past him on the gravel, after which he regains contact on the tarmac.
Pogacar misses a corner and hits the deck with 50 kilometres to go, forcing him to chase. Swift also loses contact and he doesn’t make it back, whereas Pogacar does in the run-up to the Le Tolfe sector, partly because Pidcock takes it easy.
Swift winds up in a chasing group with Tim Wellens, Pello Bilbao, Bean Healy, and Roger Adrià, 1 minute down on the two leaders.
Pogacar makes his move on the gravel of the Colle Pinzuto. Pidcock cracks, and shortly after, Wellens attacks from the chasing group.
The Slovenian leaves the final sterrato, Le Tolfe, behind with a one-minute lead over Pidcock. That’s more than enough for his second consecutive victory in Strade Bianche. In doing so, he also matches record-holder Fabian Cancellara with a total of three wins.
