The race sets off in Sovico, some 30 kilometres north of Milan. The route continues further north to the Dolomite mountains, yet the route runs mostly on the flat. After 15 kilometres a false flat takes the riders to an elevation of 357 metres before descending to Lago di Annone and Lago de Como. The route moves through Lecco and heads further north on the banks of the enchanting lake. With mountains all around the course remains predominantly flat. Just before reaching the northernmost end of the Lago de Como a right turn leads inland. A little more than 10 kilometres later the climb to the line begins in Morbegno.
The first slopes are quite doable – false flat and stretches up to 4%, basically. Then the average gradient goes up to 6% with steepest ramps of 9%. With 3.5 kilometres remaining the route flattens out before the last kilometre once again goes up at 6%.
The first three riders on the line win time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint (at kilometre 90.7) comes with 3, 2 and 1 second.
