Race report
The lead of the breakaway – Ryan Mullen, Fabio Felline, David Gaudu, Olivier Le Gac, Quentin Pacher, Julien Bernard, Mads Pedersen, Michael Mørkøv, Iván García, Gregor Mühlberger, Albert Torres, Cees Bol, Nico Denz, Thomas De Gendt, Simon Carr, Julius van den Berg, Franck Bonnamour, Alexis Gougeard – never exceeds 2 minutes.
The lead falls below 1 minute on the false flat approach to the Turini.
With 10 kilometres to go, Mühlberger is the only remaining attacker. Roughly 3 kilometres later, Adam Yates attacks from the peloton. Primoz Roglic tracks him down with Daniel Felipe Martínez and Nairo Quintana in his wheel.
The Slovene counter-attacks. He gobbles up Mühlberger with only one shadow left – Martínez.
Simon Yates and Nairo Quintana regain contact inside the last 3 kilometres before the Briton accelerates 1 kilometre later. He digs again and again, but Quintana is the one in trouble.
Roglic wins the uphill sprint a few metres ahead of Martínez, while Yates finishes in third.
