Race report
After 14 kilometres of hard racing a group of ten riders opens up a gap. Harm Van Houcke, Ruben Fernandez, Laurent Pichon, Valentin Madouas, Brandon McNulty, Michael Mørkøv, Matteo Jorgenson, Owain Doull, Anthony Turgis and Franck Bonnamour carve out a lead of 7 minutes.
Madouas is the first rider over the Croix de Chaubouret, Côte de Saint-Jeure-d’Ay, Côte de Saint-Romain-de-Lerps, and Côte de Toulaud . The Frenchman is the new KOM leader.
McNulty jumps clear from the breakaway on the Col de la Mure. Yellow jersey Van Aert can’t follow the pace in the peloton.
McNulty reaches the summit of the Mure 1 minute a head of the first chasers, Vanhoucke, Jorgenson and Bonnamour.
Martínez attacks from the peloton on a short climb inside the last 12 kilometres, but virtual leader Roglic brings the Colombian back.
McNulty solos to triumph, while Roglic crosses the line to swap the virtual race lead for the actual race lead.
