Ten years ago Paris-Nice visited Orléans for the last time. Back then, the town was the end station of an echelon marked stage. Tom Boonen took the spoils ahead of José Joaquín Rojas and John Degenkolb. In a more distant past Eddy Merckx took one of his 34 Tour de France stage wins in Orléans.
The route of stage 2 is not very remarkable in itself. If it’s a quiet day, the race will doubtless culminate in a bunch sprint. If it’s a day with howling crosswinds, echelons are likely to rip apart the peloton and blow up the Race to the Sun.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints – at kilometre 73.9 and at kilometre 122.4 – come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
