The riders click into their pedals in El Retiro, a town 30 kilometres south of Medellín. A flat opener of 42 kilometres runs to the foot of Alto de Virgin. The climb is nothing special – 1.3 kilometres at 5.9% -, certainly not in comparison with the descent. The route drops in 20 kilometres from 2,285 metres to 1,425 metres.
A section on the flat continues onto a sheer endless false flat. At kilometre 132 the upward slope stops before a gradual downhill runs to the foot of the final climb. That is, there is one KOM climb in between. Nothing special though, only 800 metres at 3.6%, but still classified 4.
The final haup up is something else. Alto de Palmas climbs for 15.6 kilometres at 6.7%. The penultimate kilometre slopes at 9.1% and features ramps up to 18%.
The first three riders on the line win time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds each.
